Shading Tutorial by kohu-arts Shading Tutorial by kohu-arts
Because I keep getting asked this and my art is majorly sucking today anyway. Have a shading tutorial.

I learned this method from other artists, so it is NOT something I made up, but I can't find some of the old tutorials I learned from.

If you really want to know how to draw/color/shade/etc. for formal training purposes (in other words, you want a job in art at some point), go and learn from a professional, not me. ;3

Also, have a River, he's adorable! :3 He's owned by :iconkainaa:. ^^

For this picture, I used PhotoShop 7.0/CS, but more recently I've started using Manga Studio 5.0 for everything I draw/color. :)

I have PhotoShop 7.0, which doesn't work on my computer, and PhotoShop CS2, which gives me errors all the time. I've pretty much switched over to SAI and Manga Studio 5. :)

When you do it in PS do you put it back in SAI? If not, what format do you save it as?

If I have to do the background yet, I do go back into SAI. :) Or if I'm finished after shading, I just merge the layers and save as .JPEG or .PNG.

Ah, thank you! Your lineart is so smooth, and after moving to SAI..I find mine are smoother. Though I can't seem to keep my hand still, it goes all shaky sometimes and their are little bumps in my lineart. How do you get yours so straight? I'm sorry for bombarding you with questions, but your art is so beautiful c:

Yeah, SAI definitely helps with smoother lines. :) As far as keeping things smooth goes ... I try to make long, quick sweeping motions when I make any line, even if I have to zoom out for it. It also means that I sometimes have to redo a line quite a few times before I get it 'right.' (Ctrl Z is the quick-undo button, which helps a lot.)

And no worries at all, I ask questions about other artists' techniques all the time. :3

It's similar to how I do it, but you've given me little tips that might make it look prettier :XD: And if you ever do a lineart tutorial *hint hint* I'll be loving you even more!!

Awwww, that's easy. X3 I just use the pencil tool at about 3 to 5 pixels, and use sweeping motions to make each line, redoing each line until I get it right. I then take an eraser brush and taper the ends. :3

I knew you were doing something different. I was being lazy and using the curve tool  But I think I found the proper settings that make the lines look like yours :XD:

I just use the standard pencil tool. :) I freehand everything.
